Rip currents and tidal waves

Written September 12, 2021

At long last, tomorrow is the first day of school in NYC, and we are in a sea of excitement and nervousness and wondering what to expect. Tomorrow students who haven’t set foot in a classroom in 18 months will walk through the doors again, students who volleyed in and out of school in the hybrid model (and then transitioned to five days a week late in the spring) will be back full time. I’m wondering if we’ll be walloped by a tidal wave or if the effects will be more like a rip tide, where you sense something and then have to figure out how to return to the calm.

Tonight I celebrate crossing the summertime finish line and I’ll take a very deep breath, knowing the current will pull us out and push us back in, but in the end, we’ll ride the waves just fine.
